Nobility titles

The nobility is a social group formed by few people and characterized by wealth and privileges acquired with birth. It is also called aristocracy. In Europe, during the Middle Ages, the nobility was formed by great landowners who inherited from their parents, or received from the king, titles of nobility, such as those of Count, Baron, Duke, Marquis, etc. In Brazil, during the Empire, many people belonging to the rich classes received titles of nobility. Most of them were coffee farmers. Therefore, they became known as coffee barons. Others, however, did not own land. This was the case of the industrialist Irineu Evangelista de Souza (1813-1889), who received from Dom Pedro II the titles of baron and viscount of Mauá.
